Virtues Program

respect prayer

St. Barbara highlights a virtue each month on the annoucements and at monthly virtue assemblies.  Please join us for our Virtues Assemblies. Check our monthly Newsletter for dates and times.

The virtue for the month of February is Respect.

We all deserve to be treated respectfully by others. However, in order to be respected we also have to respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to school/work free of gossip, name-calling, and putdowns. We should expect to be treated with  respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate Expectations, a respectful person...

  • Has a confident, positive sense of self and respect for the dignity and welfare of others
  • Honours the rights, responsibilities and contributions of self and others
  • Values and honours the important role of family in society
  • Values the environment and uses resources wisely
  • Honours the faith traditions, world religions and life journeys of all people of goodwill

For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. (1 Cor. 9:19)

Our Patron Saint - St. Barbara - The Brave Martyr - Feast Day December 4th

When Barbara was a young girl, she was imprisoned in a high tower by her cruel father. She was a good person, who was cared for by servants. One day a priest was passing by the tower and Barbara heard him singing about Jesus Christ. Barbara asked the priest about Jesus , and he told her all about the Saviour. Barbara became full of joy.

Barbara proclaimed her love for Jesus and that she was a Christian too.  Her father heard about this and he became very angry as in those days it was considered unlawful to believe in Jesus and follow his teachings. Barbara's father presented her to a judge , who even though he saw how pure and good she was, ordered her to be punished. She was beheaded.

When the soldiers had carried out the order, angels came and carried Barbara's soul to heaven, a bolt of lightening struck down and took the life of her evil father.
